Rarely does a game come along that promises so much and manages to pull it off and then some, Bethesda Softwork's Morrowind did this, it brought their Elder Scrolls series crashing into a wider audience (dare I say "mainstream"), and not just on the Windows PC - but most thought-provoking of all, onto a console, the Xbox.

There are those who stick to their guns and say RPG-ing can only by done on the PC because gamers don't want to spend hours and hours working out how to do stuff on a console, they just want to sit down and have a quick short blast. But Bethesda beautifully demonstrated games of this scope and size can be successful on a console, Morrowind's sales figures is evidence of that.

Well they're not contempt with that, just a few months ago they announced the 4th instalment in the Elder Scrolls series - Oblivion. The RPG "for the next generation" and they mean it.

The story starts off with our character in a dungeon, unknown is to him at the time the Emperor has been rushed through the dungeons by his guards to avoid an assassin, travelling through a secret passage he ends up in your cell, and you discover him fatally wounded by an assassin. And there the main quest begins.

The game itself takes place in the imperial province of Tamriel, far to the west of Morrowind. Where you are tasked with closing the gates of Oblivion, another realm filled with god-like Daedric princes and their underlings. Those who have played Morrowind no doubt encountered some lower Daedra, often possessing lost ruins, and of course Azura who guided you through the main Morrowind campaign is one of the "gods".

The game features a brand new engine, the screenshots have to be seen to be believed, this game will blow your mind. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Much improved will also be the AI, now NPCs will have daily lives, they'll perform tasks you'd expect them to perform. A welcome relief from Morrowind where the NPCs effectively stood around all day, now they'll be much more dynamic and will react with whatever surroundings they find themselves in. However with this comes new problems (for the player that is), they'll be able to steal from you, as you can from them. The game will be populated with around one thousand NPCs, a smaller number then Morrowind but still huge, all the dialogue will now be voice acted and they'll be able to have limited conversations with each other, something that will greatly add to the realism of the world.

The combat system, primarily to make it more "fun" if you cast make to Morrowind a low-level character spending 5 minutes trying to kill a mud crab with a weapon he's not very good with isn't much fun at all.

Oblivion is pencilled in for the end of 2005 on the PC, with an Xbox 2 release to follow.

Cool mini-preview....although I think you should have elaborated more on the engine, that would most likely transform a good portion of the article into a technical babeling mess. Unless, of course, you keep the engine details in english, lol.

by Grond-Hammer of the Underworld @ 04 November 11:16
The engine will have modulate caracter. That is good because not only gamers will have option to make plug-in, but Bethesda will have possibility to make game much faster. They don't need to rewrite engine system code every time when they want to change something big in the game. Oblivionportal.com must contain history of: Tamriel, Nirn, races outside of Tamriel and you must put something on Incarnators and history of the High Elves before Great Change.

I mean, I need a new ELDER SCROLLS Title

by Jep @ 24 February 17:11
I suppose those screenshots are taken from a pc? Will xbox pics come even close to that? I hope so, else i think ill go for the pc version...

by Cypher @ 26 February 09:04
I have no doubt in my mind that Oblivion will be as fantastic on xbox 2 as it looks on PC and anyone who thinks otherwise is folly also with the anticipation of Final Fantasy Series coming to the Xbox 2[FINALLY, dont know what took so long]Oblivion will in my mind be one of the best games to be released first

by Person444 @ 27 February 06:17
HECK YES, OBLIVION IS THE NEXT generation, BETTER THAN WOW, EVERQUEST, AND NEVERWINTER NIGHTS COMBINED

by I'm a gamer @ 28 February 00:49
These screenshots do not impress me. The facial animation in a couple of the shots is acceptable for the next-generation, the backgrounds aren't any clearer, more defined, or any more realistic than current background images. Look at GT4 on the (old, nearly outdated) Playstation 2, blades of grass, environmental effects express as much or more realism as the current screenshots of this game. The quality of the game may be an improvement over such games as Everquest and Neverwinter Nights, but the graphics do not inspire me to purchase an Xbox 2 (Working Title).

by Paul @ 28 February 17:17
The quest is not for realism - if you want realism in a game you need to blur everything. That's how GT4 does it, by simulating looking through a camera, ie so one spot will be in focus as a way to cover up having practically no level of detail on the tracks.

Look at Forza Motorsport - huge level of detail and looks massively better then GT4 - it may not look as real, but that's because they want you to see the rich colours and detail in the tracks rather then blur everything.

Oblivion isn't a realistic game, it's a fantasy game, I want the world to look beautiful which it does, I don't care if it looks realistic or not.

by Cypher @ 01 March 11:30
I think "I'm a gamer" must be blind if he thinks they aren't clear or mabey just an updated computer, But i've seen further screenshots and it's shapeing up to be very impressive with its lanscaping capabilities far exceeds that of the likes of Halo 2

by Cypher @ 01 March 12:19
And as quoted by Paul who cares if its realistic its fantasy not this is your life get off ya trip

by Alex @ 21 March 01:44
"Im A Gamer", I have something to say to you buddy. You might think all of us who were blown away by Oblivion's screenshots are just uber-jaded morons, but you are sorely mistaken, im afraid. It's you who are the jaded one, and i think you said what you did about being unimpressed simply to get a reaction from people like me. And for that, friend, you can eat shit and die. Thank you and good night

Sup you guys, just wanted to say my peace, and that is that oblivion will blow any and every game of the RPG style before it out of the water, and I am highly anticipating the havoc Physics (Halflife 2) and the gorgeous graphics, and horses(finnaly) i just wonder how the levelup systems, and progression will flow. If anyone knows, give me a sign

by metal_dawn @ 09 April 19:53
Um... So yah, I've been chilling at the Elder Scrolls forums for several months and wanted to tell you all a few things about the upcoming title, er... my opinions anyways. Okay, first of all, the lack of detail on the NPC's in those screenies, is likely due to the fact that the build used to make those screenshots is actually not complete. You can expect the level of detail in the final release to be even greater than what you have seen so far.

I believe that the NPC AI, will be the thing that really impresses and draws people to this title. Sure, Havoc physics are pretty to look at, and add to the realism, but if you don't have convincing NPC interaction, the entire game falls apart. Nothing ruins suspension of disbelief like the unrealistic actions of a "cookie-cutter" NPC. Radiant AI, the much trumped AI system developed by Bethesda Softworks, for use in oblivion is what will be powering the AI of the NPCs in ES4. Characters will find food if they are hungry, and attain it in several ways based on their personality/financial situation etc. IF they are a roguish character, they may well go and pick-pocket another NPC, or even you. A guard who is at the front gates of the town, may "skip out" for a break, wander home for a snack, then return hoping no one has noticed. If, they have some change in their pocket, they may well just venture to a vendor and buy a snack.

NPC's interaction will be unscripted and entirely reliant on the AI system. If any of you have played "Thief: Deadly Shadows" I believe you will have an idea of how AI can work in this game. Granted, thief was a very flawed implementation of this idea of self determined NPC's and the scale of self determination and interaction which was needed for Thief is no where near the level neaded for a game like elder scrolls (oblivion), but you get my point... right?

This game, I suspect will look better on the xbox 2 initially than it does on the PC. Let's face it, on release xbox 2 is going to blow most PC systems out of the water... a few months after it's release when the PC market catches up, only a few enthusiasts will own what will be the over priced equivalent PC hardware. So really, yah xbox2 is your best bet.

and Noone, the guy who posted just above me... We are gamers here, and gaming is what we do... Anyone who will judge a gamer for discussing / being into what they love is obviously not a gamer themselves. In which case I must ask, what are you doing here? Who is sad and lonely that they are posting on this? If you obviously don't care about gaming / gamer culture, get the fuck off my intarweb!

It's seriously high time we gamers started asserting ourselves as a viable culture, and stopped letting people mock us for being "sad and lonely" etc. I'm a well integrated university student, I take great interest in playing games and the playing of games (ie: how/why others are motivated to play / continue play, what are games etc) and I never let anyone refer to me, or my gaming habits in a negative life. Several years from now, when I have a great understanding of the industry and the market, have put in a few years in entry level industry work, and earned a respectable name for myself, I will be the one designing games and using the knowledge and interest and most of all my passion to design and/or develop what I hope will be the inspiration of another generation.

I think the biggest problem with the gamer mentality right now, is the people who think, "it's just a game and anyone who doesn't look at it like me is obviously sad/pathetic/mal-adjusted etc etc etc." Just some random ramblings of mine, cheers!
